Marianne North (1830-1890) Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Marianne North 's diaries reveal how overcoming obstacles almost seemed to inspire her to paint. From 1877 to 1879, she travelled alone through isolated rural places from southern to northern India, and endured often uncomfortable and even potentially dangerous situations.

By far the largest contributor to Kew's collections of paintings in oil is Marianne North (1830-1890). She produced nearly 1,000 works in 20 years, travelling across the globe, documenting the flora, fauna and culture that she encountered. She then presented her works to Kew and provided a gallery for their display.

Inside the Marianne North Gallery at Kew. In 1882 her gallery at Kew was completed. She filled it with twenty years of her life and world travels—800 oil paintings! But that wasn't the end of her travels as an artist. In 1883 she painted in South Africa where she met the botanical artist Katharine Saunders.

The cross sections also reveal a lot about Marianne North's painting techniques. For example wet paint was applied over a wet layer indicating a 'wet-in-wet' painting technique. This can be seen where the colours are mixed in the cross section and there are no visibly defined layers. Having only one or two paint layers also indicates that.
